Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802–1887)
Dix, Dorothea Lynde. An American philanthropist and author; born in Maine, in 1802; died in Trenton, NJ, July 19, 1887. In early life she kept a school for girls. Later she gave her attention to ameliorating the conditions of paupers, criminals, and insane persons. During the Civil War she was superintendent of hospital nurses for the Union Army. Among her works—many of which were published anonymously—are: ‘The Garland of Flora’ (1829); ‘Prisons and Prison Discipline’ (1845).
