Edmund Spenser (1552?–1599)
Spenser, Edmund. A celebrated English poet, born in London about 1552; died at London, Jan. 16, 1598–9. His works, in their order of publication, are: ‘The Shepherd’s Calendar’ (1579); ‘The Faery Queen’ (1590), first three books; ‘Daphnaida’ (1591); ‘Complaints’ (1591), a collection of poems: ‘Colin Clout’s Come Home Again’ (1595); ‘Amoretti’ (1595), containing sonnets and ‘Epithalamion’; ‘Faery Queen’ (1596), second three books; ‘Four Hymns’ (1596); ‘Prothalamion’ (1596); ‘Astrophel’ (1596). Posthumously appeared ‘View of the State of Ireland’ (1633). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
