Epicharmus (fl Fifth Century B.C.)

Epicharmus (ep-i-kär’mus). An ancient Greek comic poet; born in the island of Cos, 540 B.C., but lived at Syracuse. He is the founder of the Doric-Sicilian comedy, so-called. Only a few fragments of his works survive; they were mostly travesties of myths, with some scenes from life. They were witty dialogues containing homely aphorisms.
