Fiona MacLeod (William Sharp) (1855–1905)
Macleod, Fiona (mak-loud’). A nom-de-plume of William Sharp the English critic, supposed to be a picturesque Irish poet and novelist whose work was prominent in the Celtic renaissance. Mr. Sharp’s death in 1905 revealed the fact that Fiona Macleod was the creation of that critic’s fancy. He wrote under her name: ‘Pharais’ (1895), a romance; ‘The Mountain Lovers’ (1895); ‘The Sin-Eater and Other Tales’ (1895); ‘The Washer of the Ford’ (1896); ‘Green Fire’ (1896); and a modern version of the old Celtic romance ‘The Laughter of Peterkin.’
