Francesco Guicciardini (1483–1540)
Guicciardini, Francesco (gwē-chär-dē’nē). A distinguished Italian historian; born at Florence, March 6, 1483; died on May 23, 1540. He was a prominent figure in the Italian public life of his time. His principal work, ‘History of Italy,’ recounts without passion or partisanship the political events of 1492–1534; it was published in 1561–64, and republished ten times in the fifty years succeeding. Long after his death, appeared as ‘Unpublished Works’ (1857–67, 10 vols.) his ‘Political Reminiscences,’ a series of aphorisms on politics; ‘The Government of Florence,’ an essay on the forms of government suited for an Italian State; and a ‘History of Florence.’
