Francis Galton (1822–1911)
Galton, Francis. A distinguished English anthropologist and traveler; born at Duddeston, near Birmingham, 1822; died in London, Jan. 17, 1911. He was grandson of Erasmus Darwin, and thus a kinsman of the celebrated author of ‘The Origin of Species.’ His principal works are: ‘Narrative of an Explorer in Tropical South Africa’ (1853); ‘The Art of Travel, or Shifts and Contrivances in Wild Countries’ (1855); ‘Hereditary Genius, its Laws and Consequences’ (1869); ‘Experiments in Pangenesis’ (1871); and in the same line of studies, ‘English Men of Science, their Nature and Nurture’ (1874); ‘Inquiry into Human Faculty’ (1883); ‘Natural Inheritance’ (1889); ‘Finger Prints’ (1893).
