François Pétis de la Croix (16531713)
Pétis de la Croix, François (pā-tē’ dė lä krwä’). A French Orientalist; born in Paris in 1653; died in 1713. He was secretary to the French ambassador in Morocco and later professor of Arabic in the Royal College of France. He translated from the Persian ‘The Thousand and One Days’ (5 vols., 1710–12). His great work ‘The History of Timur,’ from the Arabic of Ali Yazdi, was published nine years after his death (4 vols., 1722), and translated into English in 1723.
