Friedrich Fröbel (1782–1852)
Fröbel, Friedrich (frė’bel). A notable German educator; born at Oberweissbach, April 21, 1782; died at Marienthal, June 21, 1852. He was for some time associated with Pestalozzi, but evolved a theory of education of his own. To explain it he wrote ‘The Education of Man’ (Vol. i., 1826), a work of deep and original thought. He opened the first Kindergarten or Children’s Garden at Blankenburg, Thuringia, 1840. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
