Friedrich Hassaurek (1831–1885)
Hassaurek, Friedrich (häs’sour”ek). An Austrian-American prose- and verse-writer; born in Vienna, Oct. 8, 1831; died at Paris, Oct. 3, 1885. As a boy he was a volunteer soldier in the Austrian army in 1848, but came to this country the next year, and was long a journalist in Cincinnati. He was United States minister to Ecuador under Lincoln. ‘Four Years among the South-Americans,’ a volume of sketches; ‘The Secret of the Andes,’ a novel; and a collection of verses written in German, are his remembered works.
