Friedrich Rückert (1788–1866)
Rückert, [Johann Michael] Friedrich (rük’ert). A distinguished German poet and Orientalist; born at Schweinfurt, Bavaria, May 16, 1788; died at Neuses, near Coburg, Jan. 31, 1866. He published his ‘German Poems’ (1814) containing the famous ‘Panoplied Sonnets’ directed against Napoleon under the pen-name of “Freimund Raimar.” He published many translations from the Arabic, and wrote many original poems dealing with Oriental subjects; among them being: ‘Oriental Roses’ (1822); ‘Songs and Legends of the Orient’ (1837); ‘Rostem and Suhrab: A Heroic Tale’ (1838); and ‘Brahman Tales’ (1839). The most elaborate of all his works is ‘The Wisdom of the Brahmans’ (1836–39). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
