Hackländer, Friedrich Wilhelm von (hāk’len-der). A German romance-writer and humorist; born in 1816; died in 1877. Among his writings, based in many cases on his own experiences as merchant and soldier, are: ‘Scenes of Military Life’; ‘The Soldier’s Life in Peace’; ‘Traffic and Trade’ (Handel und Wandel); ‘Anonymous Stories’; ‘Pilgrimage to Mecca’; ‘Pictures of Life’; ‘Forbidden Fruit.’
