Gaultier de Coste, Seigneur de La Calprenède (1610?63)
La Calprenède, Gauthier de Coste, Seigneur de (lä käl-pre-nād’). A French romancer (1610?–63). His romance of chivalry, ‘Cleopatra’ (12 vols., 1647–58), in which contemporary personages and manners are portrayed under names and amid surroundings of the age of Augustus, is prolix and wearisome; but the characters are for the most part well defined, some of the scenes skillfully contrived, and the style always elegant. Among his other romances, in a like vein, are: ‘Cassandra’ (10 vols., 1642–50); ‘Pharamond’ (7 vols., 1661–70); ‘Diversions of the Princess Alcidiana’ (1661).
