George Catlin (1796–1872)
Catlin, George. An American prose-writer and painter: born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, 1796; died in Jersey City, NJ, Dec. 23, 1872. From 1832 till 1839 he traveled and lived among the Indians of America, of whom he painted hundreds of portraits; in 1841 he published ‘Illustrations of the Manners, etc., of the North American Indians’; and subsequently, ‘Life among the Indians’ and ‘The Breath of Life.’ His little book ‘Shut Your Mouth’ was widely read; it was founded on his theory that the Indians owed their vigor of health to their habit of breathing through the nose.
