George Horatio Derby (1823–1861)

Derby, George Horatio [“John Phœnix”]. An American humorist; born in Dedham, MA, April 3, 1823; died in New York, May 15, 1861. Graduated at West Point (1846), and served in the army during the Mexican War (1846–47). He wrote under the name “John Phœnix” a series of sketches and burlesques, entitled ‘Phœnixiana’ (1855) and ‘The Squibob Papers’ (1859).
