Giambattista Basile (c. 1575c. 1632)
Basile, Giambattista (bä-zēl’e), Count of Torone. An Italian poet and writer of fairy tales; died before 1634. His most prominent works are written in Neapolitan dialect, of which they are the most valuable literary monument. ‘The Pentameron’ (1637) is a collection of 50 folk-tales, distributed over five days, which became a great favorite and was widely translated.
