Gilles Durant (15541615?)
Durant, Gilles (dü-ro‘). A French poet; born in Clermont, 1554; died at Paris, 1615?. He tried his hand at every species of metrical composition, odes, elegies, sonnets, and imitations of the Psalms; but his important work is contained in a ‘Menippean Satire,’ written to ridicule the League against Henry IV.,—the sub-title being ‘Lamentation for a Leagued Ass, that Died in 1590, when the States Were in Session.’
