Gottfried Bernhardy (1800–1875)

Bernhardy, Gottfried (bern-här’dē). A German classical philologist; born in Landsberg-on-the-Warthe, March 20, 1800; died in Halle, May 14, 1875. He lectured very brilliantly at the leading universities, his principal works being ‘Greek Syntax Scientifically Considered’ (1829), a historical study of the subject; ‘Outlines of Roman Literature’ (5th ed. 1872); ‘Outlines of Greek Literature’ (part i., 5th ed. 1892; part ii., 2d–3d ed. 1876–80; part iii. wanting), and a supplement to the first-named treatise, entitled ‘Paralipomena [Omissions] in [the Work on] Greek Syntax’ (1854–62).
