Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–c. 1377)
Guillaume de Machaut (gē-yōm’ dė mä-chō’). A French poet and musician; born in Machaut, Seine-et-Marne about 1300; died at Rheims about 1377. A lady of prominence at the French court—the wife of the Comte de Foix according to some, Péronne d’Armentières according to others—fell in love with him, and their amours are set forth in his ‘Voir Dit’ or ‘Book of Said and Seen.’ ‘The Taking of Alexandria’ narrates the adventures of King Peter I. of Cyprus. His musical compositions were much esteemed.
