Gyp (Madame de Martel) (18491932)
Martel de Janville, Gabrielle de, Countess (mär-tel’ dė zho-vēl’) [“Gyp”]. A popular French novelist; born at the Château de Koëtsal, Morbihan, about 1850. She was the creator of several new types, among them Paulette, Loulou, Bob, etc.; and was a prolific writer. Among her numerous works are: ‘About Marriage’ (1883), dramatized the same year; ‘About Divorce’ (1886); ‘Conjugal Joys’ (1887); ‘Miss Eve’ (1889); ‘The Duke’ (1892); ‘The Duchess’ (1893); ‘Baron Sinai’ (1897); ‘A Household’; ‘The Last Cry’ (1903).
