Heinrich Gottfried von Bretschneider (1739–1810)
Bretschneider, Heinrich Gottfried von (bret’shnī-der). An Austrian satirist (1739–1810). Being in government office, he published nearly all his writings anonymously. Most notable perhaps of all his compositions is the fine street ballad, ‘Frightful Story of the Murder of Young Werther.’ Worthy of mention too is the ‘Saints’ Kalendar for 1788,’ admired by Joseph II. for its witty sallies; also ‘George Waller’s Life and Morals,’ a lively satire on the intrigues of the court counselors and their agents.
