Helen Stuart Campbell (1839–1918)
Campbell, Helen Stuart. An American sociological writer; born in Lockport, NY, July 4, 1839; died in 1918. Her early writings were published in newspapers and magazines. She gave close attention to the study of social problems in such works as ‘Prisoners of Poverty.’ From 1881 till 1884 she was literary editor of Our Continent, Philadelphia. Her style is serious, witty, and emotional. Among her published books are: ‘The Problem of the Poor’ (1882); ‘The What-to-do Club’ (1884); ‘Miss Melinda’s Opportunity’ (1886); ‘Household Economies’ (1896); ‘Ballantyne,’ a novel (1901).
