Henri-Joseph Du Laurens (1719–1797)
Du Laurens, Henri-Joseph (dü-lōr-ä
‘). A French satirical poet and novelist; born at Douai, in 1719; died at Marienbourg, Belgium, in 1797. He wrote with his friend Groubenthal against the Jesuits; the ‘Jesuitics’ (1761), modeled on Demosthenes’s ‘Philippics’; but executed a more enduring task in the ‘Jesuit Priest (or Companion) Matthew’ (Compère Mathieu: 1776), a novel of genuine literary merit, and of great vogue even within a recent time.
