Henry Brewster Stanton (1805–1887)
Stanton, Henry Brewster. An American journalist, reformer, and abolitionist; born in Griswold, CT, June 29, 1805; died in New York, Jan. 14, 1887. He married Elizabeth Cady in 1840. He was active in the antislavery movements (1837–41), was admitted to the bar, and gained reputation in patent law (1847); assisted in organizing the Republican party (1858–60); and from 1868 was an editor of the New York Sun. He contributed to the Liberator, wrote much for periodicals, and published: ‘Sketches of Reform and Reformers in Great Britain and Ireland’ (1849); and ‘Random Recollections’ (1886).
