Hermann Kurz (1813–1873)
Kurz, Hermann. A German novelist; born at Reutlingen, Würtemberg, Nov. 30, 1813; died at Tübingen, Oct. 10, 1873. He is best known by his two romances, ‘Schiller’s Life in his Native Place’ (2d ed. 1856–57), describing Würtemberg; and ‘Mine Host of the Sun’ (2d ed. 2 vols., 1862), a Swabian tale. ‘From the Days of Dishonor’ (1871) was historical in tone; ‘On Shakespeare’s Life and Work’ (1868) and the text for Konewka’s ‘Falstaff and his Companions’ (1872) were critical. He translated from the Italian, Spanish, French, and English masters, and wrote also two volumes of poems.
