Russell, Irwin. An American verse-writer; born at Port Gibson, MS, June 3, 1853; died at New Orleans, LA, Dec. 23, 1879. He was among the first to put the negro character to literary account. His dialect and other verse was collected after his death and published as ‘Poems’ (1888).
