Jacques Étienne Arago (1790–1855)
Arago, Jacques Étienne (är-ä-gō’). A French writer of travels; born at Estagel, March 10, 1790; died in Brazil, Jan. 1855. Brother of Étienne and Dominique Arago. Till 1837 his literary work consisted in the production of light theatrical pieces. He then lost his sight and made a voyage around the globe, which afforded material for two charming books: ‘Promenade around the World’ (1838) and ‘A Blind Man’s Voyage round the World.’ He had some painful experiences on this side of the globe, which are detailed in the ‘Travels of a Blind Man in California’ (1851).
