James Bryce (1838–1922)
Bryce, James. A British historian and politician; born in Belfast, May 10, 1838; died in 1922. After graduating at Oxford in 1862, he studied at Heidelberg, and subsequently practiced law in London. From 1870 till 1893 he was regius professor of civil law in Oxford. From 1907 to 1912 he was British Ambassador to the United States. In 1914 he was made a viscount. His chief works are: ‘The Holy Roman Empire’ (1864); ‘Transcaucasia and Ararat’ (1877); ‘The American Commonwealth’ (1888; revised 1910). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
