James Madison (1751–1836)

Madison, James. The fourth President of the United States; born at Port Conway, VA, March 16, 1751; died at Montpelier, VA, June 28, 1836. He served two terms as President (1809–17). He was associated with Jay and Hamilton in the composition of the ‘Federalist.’ ‘Madison Papers,’ 3 vols., appeared in 1840; ‘Letters and Other Writings,’ 4 vols., in 1865. His complete works have been published in 6 vols. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
