Jane Addams (1860–1935)

Addams, Jane. Born at Cedarville, IL, Sept. 6, 1860; died in 1935. An American worker for social reform; head of Hull House, Chicago, after 1889. Among her writings are: ‘Function of Social Settlement’ (1899); ‘Democracy and Social Ethics’ (1902); ‘Newer Ideals of Peace’ (1907); ‘The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets’ (1909); ‘Twenty Years of Hull House’ (1910); ‘A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil’ (1912).
