Jean Antoine de Baïf (1532–1589)
Baïf, Jean Antoine de (bä-ēf). A French poet (1532–89), one of the literary league known as the “Pléiade,” and the chief advocate of its plan of reducing French poetry to the metres of the classic tongues; also a spelling reformer, in favor of the phonetic system. His most meritorious works were translations of Greek and Roman dramas. Among his original productions, ‘The Mimes, Precepts, and Proverbs’ (6 editions, 1576–1619) are the most noteworthy.
