Jean-Baptiste Rousseau (1670–1741)
Rousseau, Jean Baptiste (rö-sō’). A French poet; born at Paris, April 1670; died at Brussels, March 17, 1741. He wrote a great number of odes, epistles, plays, allegories, songs, and epigrams; and although esteemed by his contemporaries “the prince of our lyric poets,” is now looked upon as a mediocre writer. He brought out an edition of his ‘Works’ (1712); and many others have subsequently appeared.
