Jean François Marmontel (1723–1799)
Marmontel, Jean François (mär-mô
-tel’). A famous French miscellaneous writer; born at Bort, July 11, 1723; died at Abbeville, Dec. 31, 1799. He was brought up by the Jesuits, and intended for the Church. Among his works were: the popular tragedies ‘Dionysius the Tyrant’ (1748); ‘Aristomenes’ (1749), etc.; ‘Moral Tales’ (1761); the novels: ‘Belisarius’ (1767) and ‘The Incas’ (1778); etc. Of more lasting value, however, were ‘French Poetics’ (1763); his contributions to the ‘Encyclopédie,’ collected as ‘Elements of Literature’ (1787); and his ‘Memoirs’ (1804).
