Jean Jacques Antoine Ampère (1800–1864)
Ampère, Jean Jacques Antoine (o
-pãr’). A French literary historian (1800–64), son of the physicist Andre M. Ampère. He became professor in Marseilles, then at the Sorbonne, and in 1833 at the College of France in Paris, being elected member of the Academy in 1847. He was among the first to introduce early Germanic poetry to the French public. He published ‘De l’histoire de la Poésie’ (1830); ‘Grèce, Rome et Dante’ (1848); ‘L’Histoire Romaine à Rome’ (1861–74).
