Jean-Jacques Barthélemy (1716–1795)
Barthélemy, Jean Jacques (bär-tāl-mē’). A French antiquarian; born at Cassis, Provence, Jan. 20, 1716; died in Paris, April 30, 1795. He won European fame with his ‘Travels of Young Anacharsis in Greece’ (1787), a fascinating picture of domestic and social life in ancient Greece, which was translated into many languages, into English by Beaumont (1791). As a romancer he tried his hand with ‘The Loves of Carites and Polydorus’ (1760), purporting to be translated from the Greek.
