Jean Jacques Élisée Reclus (1830–1905)
Reclus, Jean Jacques Élisée (rā-klü’). A French geographer and scientist; born in the Gironde, May 15, 1830; died in 1905. After extensive travels in England, Ireland, and North and South America, he devoted himself to writing on the social and political conditions of these countries, many of his articles appearing in the Revue des Deux Mondes and in the Tour du Monde. Among his numerous writings, ‘The Earth’ (1867–68); ‘The Ocean Atmosphere and Life’ (1872), and ‘Universal Geography’ (1875–88), in thirteen volumes, are most elaborate.
