Jusserand, Jean Jules (zhüs-rä
‘). A French historian of literature, and diplomat; born in Lyons, Feb. 18, 1855; died in 1932; French Ambassador to the United States after 1902. He made a specialty of the Elizabethan age, and of the literature of England in the Middle Ages; his most brilliant studies being ‘The English Theatre, from the Conquest to the Immediate Predecessors of Shakespeare,’ ‘The Novel in the Time of Shakespeare,’ ‘A Literary History of the English People,’ and ‘The English Novel.’ He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Hisotry in 1917 for ‘With Americans of Past and Present Days.’
