Jón Árnason (1819–1888)
Árnason, Jón (är’nä-son). An Icelandic writer; born at Hof, Akàgaströnd, Nov. 13, 1819; died at Reykjavik, Aug. 17, 1888. He was for many years librarian of the National Library, and devoted himself assiduously to the collection of Icelandic folk tales. He has hence been called the “Grimm of Iceland.” His principal literary work is ‘Popular Legends and Tales of Iceland’ (1862–64). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
