Joachim Heinrich Campe (1746–1818)
Campe, Joachim Heinrich (käm’pe). A German lexicographer and writer of juvenile tales (1746–1818). His educational works were long widely read and highly esteemed; especially ‘Robinson the Younger’ (1779), an adaptation of Defoe’s ‘Robinson Crusoe,’ which was translated into every European language. Next in popularity came a ‘History of the Discovery of America’ (1781).
