Joannes Antonides van der Goes (1647–1684)
Antonides van der Goes, Joannes (än-tō-nē’des vän der gös). A Dutch poet; born at Goes, May 3, 1647; died at Rotterdam, Sept. 18, 1684. The most distinguished disciple of Vondel, and a violent opponent of the one-sided French classicism, he exercised a wholesome influence upon his native literature. When only nineteen, his tragedy, ‘Trazil, or the Conquest of China’ (1664), attracted universal attention and won him the lifelong friendship of Vondel. His most famous work is ‘De Y-Stroom’ (1671), an epic of the river Y, glorifying the great international commerce of Amsterdam, and is a masterly delineation of the life in that city.
