Johan van Heemskerk (1597–1656)

Heemskerk, Johan van (hāmz’kerk). A Dutch poet and jurist; born in 1597; died at The Hague, Feb. 27, 1656. He studied law at Leyden and Paris, under his kinsman Grotius. His ‘Batavian Arcadia’ (1637) is his principal poetical work, but his love poems and elegies are much admired. His works on jurisprudence were once valuable.
