John Addington Symonds (1840–1893)
Symonds, John Addington. A distinguished English critic and historian of literature; born at Bristol, Oct. 5, 1840; died at Rome, April 19, 1893. He wrote: ‘Introduction to the Study of Dante’ (1872); ‘Studies of the Greek Poets’ (1873); ‘Sketches in Italy and Greece’ (1874); ‘The Renaissance in Italy’ (7 vols., 1875–86), his greatest work; ‘Sketches and Studies in Italy’ (1879); ‘Shakespeare’s Predecessors’ (1884); several volumes of verse both original and translated; ‘Lives’ of Sir Philip Sidney, Michelangelo, Ben Jonson, Shelley, etc. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
