John Cam Hobhouse, Lord Broughton (17861869)
Broughton, John Cam Hobhouse, Lord. An English statesman and miscellaneous writer; born at Redland, near Bristol, June 27, 1786; died in London, June 3, 1869. He was Secretary of War in 1831, and Secretary of State for Ireland in 1833. He was one of Lord Byron’s most intimate friends. He wrote: ‘Historical Illustrations of the Fourth Canto of Childe Harold’ (2d ed. 1818); ‘Journey into Albania’ (1813); ‘Letters Written by an Englishman During the Last Reign of Napoleon’ (1816); ‘Essay on the Origin and Intention of Sacrifices’; ‘A Defense of the People’; etc.
