John Donne (1572–1631)
Donne, John. An English poet; born in London, 1572; died on March 31, 1631. At forty he became a minister of the Established Church, and one of the preachers at Lincoln’s Inn, later Dean of St. Paul’s. His ‘Satires’ and his ‘Poems’ (1633) are his most important contributions to literature. Collections of sermons, ‘The Pseudo-Martyr’ and ‘Biathanatos,’ a defence of suicide, make up the bulk of his writings in prose. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
