João de Deus (1830–1896)

Deus, João de (dā-üsh). A Portuguese lyric poet; born at São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the province of Algarve, March 8, 1830; died in 1896. He is regarded as introducing a new era in Portuguese poetry. His poems, full of national spirit, are published in ‘Field-Flowers’ (1870); ‘A Branch of Blooms’ (1870); and other works.
