José Mármol (1818–1871)
Mármol, José (mar’mōl). An Argentine poet; born in Buenos Aires, Dec. 5, 1818; died there, Aug. 12, 1871. His principal works are: ‘The Pilgrim’ and ‘Harmonies,’ descriptive poems of travels (1856); the dramas ‘El Cruzado’ (1860) and ‘El Poeta’ (1862); and ‘La Amalia’ (1866), a historical romance, in the manner of Scott, intended to expose the tyranny of Rosas, the Argentine Dictator, and the moral degradation of Buenos Aires.
