Joseph Story (17791845)
Story, Joseph. A great American jurist; born in Marblehead, MA, Sept. 18, 1779; died in Cambridge, MA, Sept. 10, 1845. In 1811 he accepted the appointment of associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, and held the office until his death. His works include: ‘Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States’ (1833); ‘Commentaries on the Conflict of Laws,’ considered his ablest effort (1834); and ‘Miscellaneous Writings’ (1835). In 1851 his ‘Life and Letters’ was edited by his son, W. W. Story.
