Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833–1904)
Jovanović Zmaj, Jovan (yō-vän’ō-vitch), surnamed Zmaj. A Serbian poet, journalist, humorist, and dramatist; born an Neusatz, Nov. 24, 1833; died at Belgrade, June 14, 1904. He is called “Zmaj” or the “Dragon,” from the name of his most successful paper. The volume ‘Withered Roses’ contains the finest verse, and his farce ‘Saran’ is perennially popular on the Serbian stage.
