Juan Francisco Manzano (1797–1854)

Manzano, Juan Francisco (man-thä’nō). A Cuban poet; born in Havana, in 1797; died in 1854. A negro, born in slavery, and remaining in servitude for forty years, he obtained his education with great difficulty. While still a slave he succeeded in publishing a small volume of poems entitled ‘Passing Flowers.’ His drama ‘Zafira’ was published in 1842. Some of his poems have been translated into French and German.
