Karl Eduard Vehse (1802–1870)
Vehse, Karl Eduard (vā’zė). A German historian; born at Freiburg, Saxony, Dec. 18, 1802; died at Striesen near Dresden, June 18, 1870. He was archivist in Dresden, 1825; later settled in Berlin; but was imprisoned and banished for his ‘History of the German Courts since the Reformation’ (1851–58). Besides this monumental work, he wrote: ‘History of the Emperor Otho the Great’ (1828); ‘Tables of Universal History’ (1834); ‘Course of Universal History’ (1842); and ‘Shakespeare as Protestant, Politician, Psychologist, and Poet’ (2 vols., 1851).
