Lewis Wallace (1827–1905)
Wallace, Lewis. An American general, lawyer, and novelist; born at Brookville, IN, April 10, 1827; died at Crawfordsville, Feb. 15, 1905. He served in the Mexican War as lieutenant, and in the Civil War attained the rank of major-general. He was Minister to Turkey 1881–85. His works include: ‘The Fair God’ (1873); ‘Ben-Hur’ (1880); ‘The Life of Gen. Benjamin Harrison’ (1888); ‘Commodus: A Tragedy’ (1889); ‘The Boyhood of Christ’ (1889); ‘The Prince of India’ (1893).
